END OF SUMMER (1965)
END OF SUMMER
© 1998 by Travis Edward Pike
      Am                Dm     Am
It's come.  It's the End of Summer.
      C                               E          E7
My homeward way, I must weave
      Am            G             Am
My darling, my love stays with you
           C      G            Am
Though I, myself, must leave.

Der Sommer ist leider vorüber
Unser Liebe, trotzdem nicht vorbei
Aber Ich müss', ja, weider 'rüber
Und du, bleibst, doch, hier, Lorelei.

Soon, the dry leaves will chatter
All along this valley so low
And the golden fields of autumn
Will glisten with ice and with snow

But I'll return in the springtime
'Til then, my heart stays with you
So watch 'til the end of winter
When I'll return to you

Was kann' Ich Dir noch sagen?
Schleiss Deine Augen bis Zehn.
Noch 'nen Kuss.  Bitte, keine Fragen.
Ich liebe Dich.  Auf wiederseh'n.

This page, for the guitar freaks, not only provides lyrics and chords, but an overview of the unique collection of "axes" that Travis strummed and picked over the years.  This picture, taken in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1966, just prior to Travis' discharge from the Navy, shows him with his first German-made Framus, a six string triple pickup electric solid body, one of nine guitars (and two banjos) Travis would own and play on stage and in recording studios.  For his solo coffee house routines, his first hollow body acoustic was a Goya with a rich, crisp sound.  A Goya twelve string hollow body accoustic, a Framus dual pickup hollow body electric, a Yamaha steel string, a Yamaha classical guitar, and a dual pickup hollow body six string Gibson electric that his youngest brother, Adam, still plays, rounded out his touring collection.  He also had  a standard five string banjo and a beautiful extended neck five string banjo with genuine mother of pearl inlay!  Today, Travis has only one guitar, a Taylor model 510 six string hollow body acoustic which he occasionally plays for close friends, but mostly just keeps close to hand in case he suddenly becomes inspired.

Travis Pike's Tea Party rehearsal of "End of Summer" on MP3  (3:17)

This early rehearsal of my former coffee house solo is missing the last verse,
but features Karl Garrett playing "chattering leaves" and "ice and snow" on guitar.

Defining characteristics:  lyricist. n. a writer of lyrics, especially lyrics for popular songs.  (Editor's note.  This early song, written in both German and English, supports the "minnesinger" reference.  Now, if we could just do something about the century . . .)
