ACADEMIC SOJOURN (1973-1974)
DEAN'S HONORS LIST
AUGUST 8, 1973

“Dear Travis,

It is always good to be able to write a congratulatory letter to a person who has done a fine piece of work -- but it is doubly good when the person's quality of work is in a field where it is bound to be reflected in the minds and hearts and actions of perhaps millions of people every day.
Those of us who deal with the mass media as careers are sometimes inclined to forget the tremendous power for influence and action we hold in our hands.
. And we sometimes forget the equally tremendous requirements for quality that are going to be increasingly demanded of those in our field.
While grades are not the entire hallmark of college quality, they are one of the most important -- and they demonstrate not only competence but character.
Please accept your Department's congratulations for making the just-released Dean's Honors List.

Best regards,”
.

His classes were in Psychology, Introduction to Mass Communications, Reporting, Political Geography, Life Science (biology), Modern Theatrical Practices, US History, Visual Arts (art appreciation), Introduction to Film (rhetoric), Directing (stage), Music Fundamentals, The Structure of Music (advanced theory), History of Civilization (the ancient world), 20th Century Art (history), Man and the Environment (interdisciplinary study of the environment), Documentary Film (history), Survey of Music (appreciation) and Western Art (history).  Travis' final Grade Point Average was 3.94, dragged down by the “B” in directing!
Travis explains, “The professor said my work merited an “A,” but he only gave “A's” to Drama majors.  Realizing he had ruined a 4.0 average, he offered to change the grade, but I let it stand.  I wasn't a Drama major and I had just learned that my GI Bill was expiring!  (I hadn't known there was time limit on it!)  A degree was now out of the question, so I concentrated on getting the most I could out of my remaining two quarters, and then went back to haunting libraries and bookstores.”
